Sex and Violence!
With so much "meaningless" entertainment out there, I often wonder how meaningless it actually is. I mean, sure, sex sells and I like violence as much as the next alpha-masculine, red-necked douche... OK, maybe I should quite put it that way. Point being, sex and violence are great and attract attention, not to mention make money. It's a far cry from the Panem et Circenses of the Roman Empire and it's not quite the Opiate for the Masses of which Marx spoke, but it definitely seems to (narcotize just seems like the wrong word for this) interest us more than other subjects. Not to say humanity is all for primal, visceral imagery (although it can be great and done in a very artistic way, in its own right), but it does seem to be a long standing tradition. Especially in the U.S.

I think sex and violence are the main focus when it comes to movies and entertainment. When people view trailers to movies, they look for things that will appeal to them. Sex and violence are clearly 2 things that will appeal to young adults more than other things i think. The other 2 main focuses of entertainment are comedy and action. But i think that people now-a-days look more for the sex and violence than anything.
ReplyDeleteWell, comedy is a great form of escape. I love humor, especially if it's dark and bleak or dry and acidic. However, action flicks are pretty much just violence. I mean, there are other things to action flicks, like the presence of some sort of modernized, watered-down "hero" or "anti-hero" figure, but it's still just a long string of violence to me. Doesn't mean I don't appreciate it, though hahaha...
